The strange difference between South Asians here and back in the GTA

Image
In the twenty-five years that I lived in Toronto the East Indian community was portrayed by the media as being law-abiding, even "goody-goodies". Yet, here in the Lower Mainland, East Indians seem to be the main contributors (along with the Hell's Angels, with whom they apparently collaborate) to gang violence. What gives? They are drawn from the same immigrant pool, ie. northern India, and the preponderance of Sikhs in Abbotsford is not any greater than the preponderance of Sikhs in Brampton. Yet, they appear to be *a lot* more rambunctious here.  (Also, judging from the photo above, there might just be a bit of homoeroticism involved.)

Not strictly Abbotsford-related...

But still the funniest crime notice I believe I have ever seen.

The Secret History of Abbotsford Part I

Abbotsford, in the popular imagination, is a redneck-infested crime paradise squashed between the Fraser River and the US border, as famous for its East Indian-derived gangs as its status as the beating heart of the Fraser Valley Bible Belt (FVBB). Intriguingly, the sacred and the profane manage to co-exist in the same place in space and time. How? It is all a part of the Secret History of Abbotsford. Follow along and you just might learn something!
